Parent Category: Bringing Your Parents to New Zealand
For many migrants in New Zealand, the long-term goal isn’t just building a life here it’s being able to share that life with family.
The Parent Category Resident Visa is designed to support this. But like most things in immigration, it’s not as straightforward as people expect.
Here’s what you need to know.
What is the Parent Category?
The Parent Category allows New Zealand citizens and residents to sponsor their parents for residence.
The intention behind this category is to:
Support family connection
Align with New Zealand’s economic goals
Ensure parents can come to New Zealand without placing financial pressure on the system
Because of this balance, the rules are quite strict particularly around sponsorship and income.
A Key Thing to Understand: This is a Ballot System
Unlike some visa categories, you can’t apply directly for residence.
Instead, the process looks like this:
Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI)
Go into a ballot (pool)
Wait to be randomly selected
If selected, receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA)
Selections are made every three months, and EOIs remain in the pool for up to 2 years.
If your EOI isn’t selected within that time, it expires.
Basic Eligibility Requirements
To apply under the Parent Category, applicants must:
Have no dependent children
Meet health and character requirements
Meet English language requirements (or pre-purchase ESOL tuition)
Have an eligible sponsor in New Zealand
The Sponsorship Requirement (This is Where It Gets Technical)
The biggest hurdle for most people is the income requirement for sponsors.
Sponsors must meet income thresholds based on the New Zealand median wage, and they must show they met this income in 2 out of the last 3 years before the Invitation to Apply.
Current Median Income (from 28 Feb 2025):
$69,804.80 per year
From this, the thresholds are calculated:
1 parent, 1 sponsor → 1.5 × median income
2 parents, 1 sponsor → 2 × median income
Joint sponsors → higher combined thresholds apply
Example:
To sponsor one parent, a single sponsor currently needs to earn at least $104,707.20 per year.
Sponsors Must Also Meet Strict Criteria
It’s not just about income.
Sponsors must also:
Be a NZ citizen or resident (without conditions)
Have held that status for at least 3 years
Have been physically present in NZ (184 days per year for 3 years)
Have a clean history with immigration and sponsorship obligations
A Long-Term Commitment: 10-Year Sponsorship
This is something many people don’t realise.
Sponsors must commit to covering their parents’:
Accommodation
Maintenance
For 10 years.
This is a serious legal undertaking and Immigration New Zealand treats it that way.
Example Scenario
Let’s say two siblings in New Zealand want to sponsor their parents.
They can combine their income, but:
They must choose the same 12-month periods
They must meet the combined income threshold for those periods
They need to prove this using Inland Revenue records
Timing and planning here is critical especially if income fluctuates.
What About Timing?
Even if everything is perfect:
You still need to be selected from the ballot
There is no guarantee of selection
Processing only begins after invitation
This means the Parent Category is often part of a longer-term strategy, not a quick solution.
Final Thoughts
The Parent Category offers a valuable pathway, but it comes with:
Uncertainty (due to the ballot system)
Strict financial requirements
Long-term sponsorship commitments
For some families, it works well.
For others, it’s worth exploring alternative options or having a backup plan while waiting in the ballot.
