Received a PPI Letter?

Receiving an email or letter from Immigration New Zealand raising concerns about your visa application can be stressful.

You may see the words Potentially Prejudicial Information (PPI) and immediately think your visa is going to be declined.

That isn't necessarily the case.

A PPI letter means Immigration New Zealand has identified information or concerns that may negatively affect the outcome of your visa application, and you are being given an opportunity to respond before a decision is made.

How you respond is important.

So, what exactly is a PPI letter?

PPI stands for Potentially Prejudicial Information.

Put simply, Immigration New Zealand has identified something that concerns them and could affect the outcome of your visa application.

Depending on your application, concerns could relate to areas such as:

  • Your employment.

  • Your relationship.

  • Your health or character.

  • Your work experience or qualifications.

  • Your immigration history.

  • Information provided in your current or previous visa applications.

  • Whether you meet a particular immigration requirement.

Every PPI is different because every person's circumstances are different.

Does a PPI letter mean my visa is going to be declined?

No.

A PPI letter is not a decline decision.

However, it does mean Immigration New Zealand has identified something that could potentially lead to your application being declined if their concerns are not resolved.

This is why I wouldn't recommend ignoring the letter or assuming that a simple explanation will necessarily be enough.

Depending on the concerns raised, there can be a lot at stake.

Don't panic but do take it seriously

It is completely understandable to feel worried when you receive a letter from Immigration New Zealand raising concerns about your application.

A PPI letter gives you an opportunity to respond before Immigration New Zealand makes its decision.

However, what is required will depend on the concerns raised, the immigration instructions that apply to your application and your individual circumstances.

Sometimes an issue may be relatively straightforward.

Other times, there may be several immigration issues involved and the situation can be much more complex than it initially appears.

There will be a deadline

Your PPI letter will give you a timeframe to respond.

It is important that you don't put the letter aside and deal with it later.

Depending on the issues raised, obtaining professional advice and gathering the information or supporting documentation required can take time.

If you receive a PPI letter, I would recommend looking at your options as soon as possible rather than waiting until the deadline is approaching.

Why getting immigration advice can be important

You don't have to use a Licensed Immigration Adviser to respond to a PPI letter.

However, this is one of the situations where professional immigration advice can be particularly valuable.

By the time a PPI letter has been issued, Immigration New Zealand has identified something that could affect whether your visa is approved.

Understanding exactly what the concern means, how the relevant immigration instructions apply to your circumstances, and the potential consequences is important before deciding how to proceed.

It is also important to remember that information provided to Immigration New Zealand becomes part of your immigration history and may be relevant to future applications.

Have you received a PPI letter?

If you've received a PPI letter, don't automatically assume your visa application is going to be declined.

But don't ignore it either.

This is an important point in your visa application and a good time to get professional immigration advice.
