Do You Really Need a Licensed Immigration Adviser?

It's a question I'm asked quite often, and the answer is always the same...

It depends.

Some visa applications are quite straightforward, and if you're confident reading the Immigration New Zealand instructions, understand what information is being asked for, and can provide the right supporting documents, you may be perfectly capable of doing it yourself.

If you're happy to take that risk, you absolutely can. Immigration New Zealand allows people to prepare and lodge their own applications, and plenty of people do.

However, immigration instructions aren't always as straightforward as they appear. There are often little "fishhooks" in the policy that can easily be missed if you're not working with it every day. Something that seems like a small detail can sometimes have a significant impact on the outcome of an application.

Every situation is different

One of the biggest misconceptions about immigration is that everyone's situation is the same.

It isn't.

Two people applying for exactly the same visa can have completely different circumstances, which means the advice they need can also be different.

Something as simple as changing employers, including a partner, having children, previous visa issues, or needing to meet a policy exception can completely change the way an application should be prepared.

That's why I always start by understanding your individual circumstances before recommending the best way forward.

It's not just filling in forms

A lot of my time is spent assessing eligibility, identifying potential issues before Immigration New Zealand does, making sure the right evidence is provided, and explaining the immigration instructions in plain English.

Sometimes I'll tell someone they have a really straightforward application and can comfortably do it themselves.

Other times, I'll explain why I think professional assistance would be worthwhile.

A surprising amount of my work actually involves helping people after they've already lodged an application themselves. They often come to me when Immigration New Zealand has asked for more information or issued a PPI letter and they've realised they've misunderstood the requirements, or their application has run into problems because something was missed.

In many cases, they end up spending more time and money fixing those issues than they would have if they'd sought advice before lodging the application. Unfortunately, it's often much easier and less expensive to get it right the first time than it is to fix mistakes later.

Can I guarantee your visa will be approved?

No.

And I'd be very cautious of anyone who says they can.

The decision always sits with Immigration New Zealand.

What I can do is make sure your application is prepared properly, the right evidence is included, and your circumstances are presented as clearly as possible.

So, is it worth using an adviser?

Yes.

Applying for a visa is often about much more than paperwork. It's about being able to work, stay with your family, continue your career, or build your future here in New Zealand.

Having someone guide you through the process can make it much less overwhelming.

That said, I also believe in being honest with people. If I think you can successfully complete your application yourself, I'll tell you. I'm not interested in taking on work that someone genuinely doesn't need help with.

My advice

If you're unsure about your options, ask.

Sometimes a quick conversation is all it takes to point you in the right direction. Other times, we might identify something that could cause problems later if it isn't addressed now.

Either way, you'll have a much better understanding of where you stand and what your next steps are.

Immigration can be confusing, but it doesn't have to be. My role is to make the process easier to understand and to give you practical, honest advice so you can make informed decisions.
