Do I Need an NZQA Assessment?
Some people assume their overseas qualification will automatically be recognised in New Zealand because they hold a degree or trade qualification. Others think they need an NZQA assessment simply because someone they know had to get one.
The reality is that there isn't a one-size-fits-all answer.
Whether you need an NZQA assessment depends on your individual circumstances, the visa you are applying for, your qualification, and whether Immigration New Zealand recognises it.
Understanding this early can save you time, money and unnecessary delays, and help you plan your immigration journey with confidence.
What exactly is an NZQA assessment?
The New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) assesses overseas qualifications to determine how they compare to qualifications on the New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework (NZQCF).
Immigration New Zealand may require this assessment to confirm that your overseas qualification meets the requirements for the visa you are applying for.
An NZQA assessment doesn't determine whether you will be granted a visa. Instead, it helps Immigration New Zealand understand the level and comparability of your qualification.
When do you need an NZQA assessment?
Whether you need an NZQA assessment depends on your individual circumstances.
You may need one if:
You are applying for a visa where your qualification is used to meet immigration requirements.
Your qualification is not on Immigration New Zealand's List of Qualifications Exempt from Assessment.
Your occupation does not have another recognised registration or assessment authority that Immigration New Zealand accepts.
Every visa category has different requirements, so it's important to understand what applies to your situation.
When don't you need one?
There are many situations where an NZQA assessment isn't required.
For example, you may not need one if:
Your qualification is on Immigration New Zealand's List of Qualifications Exempt from Assessment.
Your profession has its own recognised registration or assessment process that Immigration New Zealand accepts.
The visa you are applying for doesn't require your qualification to be assessed.
This is why it's important not to assume that because someone else needed an NZQA assessment, you will too.
Common misconceptions
There are a few misconceptions that I see regularly.
"I have a university degree, so it will automatically be recognised."
Not necessarily. An overseas qualification may still need to be assessed, depending on your visa and where you obtained your qualification.
"My friend didn't need an NZQA assessment."
Your friend's circumstances may be completely different. They may have studied in another country, applied under a different visa category, or held a qualification that was already recognised.
"My employer says my qualification is recognised."
Your employer may recognise your skills and experience, but Immigration New Zealand has its own requirements when assessing qualifications for immigration purposes.
Timing
One of the biggest mistakes people make is waiting until they are ready to submit their visa application before finding out whether they need an NZQA assessment.
If an assessment is required, it can add time to your overall immigration process. Finding this out at the last minute can delay your visa application and potentially affect your plans.
At the time of writing, NZQA advises that the average wait time for an International Qualification Assessment (IQA) application is around 10 weeks due to high demand. Once NZQA has confirmed they have all the required documents, they complete 90% of applications within 15 business days (around three weeks). However, incomplete applications or difficulties verifying documents can result in further delays.
Checking whether you need an NZQA assessment early gives you time to gather the right documents, avoid unnecessary delays, and keep your immigration plans on track.
Every situation is different
Immigration is rarely as simple as following someone else's experience.
The visa you are applying for, where you gained your qualification, your occupation and your long-term goals can all influence whether an NZQA assessment is required.
Taking the time to understand the requirements before you begin can save you time, money and frustration later.
Not sure if you need an NZQA assessment?
If you're unsure whether an NZQA assessment is required for your visa application, it's worth finding out before you spend time and money.
Sometimes the answer is yes. Sometimes it's no.
The important thing is making sure you're following the right process for your individual circumstances.
